Paddle steamers are by far the best form of sea-going transport, consciously devoid of the ostentation of cruise liners, the aggression of power boats, the claustrophobia of submarines and the exertion of pedalos.
Sadly, there is only one sea-going paddle steamer left in the world – but since The Waverley sails along the south coast, the Thames, the Bristol Channel, Scottish islands, north Wales and elsewhere, it’s easy for numerous UK pensioners to enjoy a trip as often as they like.
