Sausages are one of the finest culinary inventions and should feature on the pensioner’s menu at least once a week.
The best sausages are obtained from a proper butcher and contain a high proportion of quality pork carefully blended with apple, leek, herbs or other traditional ingredients.
In recent years, city delicatessens have applied the term ‘sausage’ to an increasingly arcane range of products, and it is now possible to obtain ‘sausages’ made from turkey and lentils, koala and passion fruit and lemming and vegetarian shoes.
Dessert sausages have also been produced, but these are mainly confined to establishments such as Starbucks and Broadmoor.
Cumberland sausages should not be confused with Cucumberland sausages, which are cucumbers covered in diced Kendal Mint Cake.
