Devised by the UK Treasury to replace the phrase ‘Long-Winded Economic Piffle’, the term ‘Long Term Economic Plan’ was intended to encapsulate the government’s strategy for reducing or eliminating the deficit after the financial crisis of 2008.
It is underpinned by a rigorous sense of fairness, ensuring that the richest individuals will see their wealth double over five years, while anyone in receipt of benefits will see their debt increase by a comparable amount over a similar period.
According to the website PollPosition, Conservative candidates used the phrase more than 2 million times during the 2015 election, and it was also made into a chart-topping single by the rap artist, Dizzy Osborne.
The phrase is expected to be replaced by ‘Short-Term Economic Panic’ in 2017/18.
