Egg cups are excellent receptacles from which to eat a boiled egg, but they are also very useful for listening to the foetal heartbeat of pregnant mothers, cutting out small home-made biscuits, presenting as prizes to the winners of under-six wrestling competitions and trapping slugs or woodlice found in the fridge. They are not normally suitable for use as coal scuttles, flower vases and ear protectors.
