Simnel cake is named after Lambert Simnel, the 15th century pretender to the throne, and has proved more enduring than the contemporaneous alternative, Warbeck cake – possibly because the latter was made from peat, beeswax and crushed Perkins.
Many other cakes have been inspired by notable figures, including Victoria sponge, named after Queen Victoria; marble cake, named after the seventh Earl of Elgin; lemon dribble cake, named after Meadowlark Lemon, the legendary Harlem Globetrotter basketball player; and carrot cake, named after Ed Sheeran.
